I bought a new battery but it doesn't charge. Is it bad?

There is a common problem within Windows that it cannot see a new battery installed. To correct this problem, you need to go in to the Windows Device Manager and remove the Microsoft AC Adapter and the Microsoft ACPI-compliant Control Method Battery items from the Battery category. When you are done, shut down the laptop, unplug the AC Adapter and wait about a minute. Then, reboot and the battery should start charging. In some cases, the battery may be bad, check these steps before you attempt to replace the new battery for another.

I need a new DVD drive for my Sony

When you need a new optical drive, usually you get the full module, in Sony's case, this drive for the PCG-XG series would be PCGA-DVDX2. However, the drive inside the module is a Toshiba SD-C2402. This Toshiba drive is easy to find and cost over $100 less than the Sony module. You need to make sure the jumper is set for the Sony laptop though. This is not the kind of jumper you would find externally on a hard drive, it is internally programmed into the ROM. So make sure you get the right one. My system boots up but shuts off within two seconds. What does this mean?

There are a lot of things that can cause this. There are cases where this will happen if your memory dies. This can also happen if your motherboard or CPU have gone bad. One of the component that rarely gets checked though is the fuse on the motherboard. We always recommend that you have a professional diagnose the problem but make sure they do test for a bad fuse which may reduce the price of the repair significantly. For approved service centers in your area, please email us.

I can see an image on my LCD but it is dim. What does this mean?

Many people ask me about what to do when their screen is dim. There are several problems that can cause this. The main problem is that power is not getting to the backlight inside the LCD.  To find where the loss of power occurs, you need to use a volt meter. You should get a current of 6 volts coming out of the motherboard. First, check the voltage coming out of the ribbon cable from the motherboard. If you are getting proper voltage, move to the FL Inverter board. If the voltage is coming through the inverter, then the problem is with the LCD. If the voltage does not come through the ribbon cable, it is defective, this can be caused by a cut in the cable. If the power comes through the cable but not the inverter, then the inverter is bad. This is usually caused by a bad circuit on the board. However, if the voltage is coming through the cable and the board, then the LCD backlight is bad and the LCD will need to be replaced.
