When replacing a hard drive, you need to check the laptop manual for the interface type and maximum capacity your BIOS can read. Older laptops are IDE and are backward compatible but the laptop may have an 8GB or 80GB read limit. This may be fixed with a BIOS upgrade. Newer drives can be SATA or PATA and are not compatible with standard IDE. Some manufacturers put an interface connector over the 44-pin drive connector that will need to be removed and installed on the new drive.
